10 Reasons Why Cats Love Camping

1)      Relaxation - an endless sun spot for warmth, no shifting required.

2)      Family Time – no one is in a hurry, there are many folding chairs to lounge on.

3)      Amusements – an abundance of new toys: falling leaves, rolling acorns, fuzzy
dandelions, wild catnip, hidey holes in tree stumps and tall grass…

4)      Bird Watching – unlimited opportunities to view new feathered friends.

5)      Career Advancement – a new position in the pack as Lookout. Keeping pesky bears (moose, raccoons, armadillos, coyotes, etc.) at bay.

6)      Sleep Options – anywhere; nothing is off limits when camping.

7)      Hunting – a million bugs to chase down and extinguish.

8)      Claw Maintenance – after hunting bugs and such, there are scratching posts everywhere!

9)      Sleeping Bags – purrrrfect for a cozy cat nap.

10)   A Giant Litter Box – no time outs for going "outside" the litter box.

Oh yes, cats LOVE camping!

I'm Ready for Camping Season...

A little camping humor……

After having good, hearty meal for dinner, they laid themselves down in their tent for the night and went to sleep. Some hours later, after hearing a Great Horned Owl begin hooting a strange call, Detective Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friend.

Holmes said: "Watson, look up and tell me what you see".
Watson said: "I see a fantastic panorama of countless stars".

Holmes: "And what does that tell you, my good boy?"
Watson then pondered for a moment...
"Astronomically, it tells me that there are billions of stars and galaxies and potentially millions of planets. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo, good news for pisces. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three am. Theologically, I can see that God is All Powerful; and that we are small and insignificant in comparison to the Divine Powers that rule the Universe. And, meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow from the lack of cloud coverage."

Then Dr. Watson follows up his incredibly thorough answer with this:
"Why? What does it tell you, Holmes?"
Holmes was silent for a moment then spoke: "Someone has stolen our tent."

Get Outside and enrich your life by discovering the lighter side of yourself.  Laughing a little more about things in general is good for the soul. For some reason, hilarious things tend to occur when we're outside with our friends camping; I think it's God's way of rewarding us for doing something good for our bodies and souls.

Wisdom and truth comes in all shapes and sizes and from all beliefs. Finding your path in the world isn't always easy, but I believe the serenity and peace of the outdoors can lead you closer to enlightenment. Balance yourself and calm your spirit by venturing out into nature…think outside…no box required!

"...There are signs everywhere to help you find your way..."

http://www.etsy.com/listing/116155451/i-dream-big-canvas-tote-bag-100-10oz?
For the last three weeks I've been walking past a large sign in the lobby that reads:

DREAM BIG!

It seems like that same message has been following me no matter what path I take. It was on the side panel of a bus stop, in the newsletter from our church, it’s the underlying theme of the novel I'm reading, and it was written in chalk on the sidewalk behind our house..."Dream Big"...

Are these signs God’s way of moving me toward my dreams and goals; by showing me the message over and over again? This constant reinforcement of the message makes me think of a movie that I saw many years ago titled: Fools Rush In. The movie wasn’t a blockbuster, but one line in the movie struck a chord with me “There are signs everywhere to help you find your way.” The movie was about knowing when to take a risk and following a dream, all you need to do is recognize the signs.

This made me ask myself a question about why I haven’t been in tune with my dreams: “Is fear holding me back from realizing my dreams?” Something my Sweetie said recently made me think about my fears. I realized that I was not living my dream because I was desperately afraid- of financial ruin, of failure, of letting people down, and the possibility of regret. This question is helping me separate the fear from the dream, and in doing so, I realize that I really do want to move forward, in spite of the fear. My husband’s question helped me identify the fears and determine whether they deserved as much power as I was giving them. I'm learning to address the fears separately and not spoil the dream. Do I still worry about those fears? Absolutely. Will I let them rule my choices anymore? No Way! I'm on the threshold of a life change.

Now a final thought on Dreaming Big....This wonderful commercial is the story of a little guy’s triumph against the odds. A little donkey who wanted to be a Clydesdale, manages to fulfill his dream. The advertisement is a testament to "Dreaming Big" and fulfilling our dreams....Enjoy!

9 Excuses Preventing You from Becoming a Successful Etsy Seller

9 Excuses preventing you from becoming a Etsy success.
Start Your Own Etsy Store - Image by Schugirl08

Be honest. How often do you interfere with yourself?

Today or really any day, you know you have tasks you’d like to finish because they’d positively impact your Etsy business, and then there are the tasks you actually do. You trick yourself into thinking that keeping up with Pinterest, following others on Facebook, and reading the latest blog posts is “working on your Etsy shop”. You do know better, but some part of you believes that having an understanding of all things “Etsy” will better position you when the time is right. When that time comes, you’ll be the absolute front-runner of the handmade world, because you’re so well studied… But that day doesn’t come.

Something is holding you back from great success on Etsy, and you can’t quite put your finger on it. So instead of moving past it and taking action, you make an excuse. You justify your reasons for not moving forward.

What follows are 9 of the most common excuses you might tell yourself.

9 Excuses preventing you from becoming a Etsy success.
Take a risk!

1.) You can’t afford to take a risk right now.
If not now, then when?
This excuse is fear of the unknown.
The reality is that you can’t afford not to take a risk right now.
Putting on the breaks doesn’t just inhibit your creativity…it prevents people from ever making a purchase from you. Just go for it, take the risk!

2.) You don’t know where to begin.
Just take it step-by-step.
Think about it, every great seller on Etsy probably thought “I don’t know where to begin.”
Before you know it you’ll be a pro and will hardly remember how nerve-wracking these first steps were.
I found this article a big help when I was starting my Shop:
http://www.etsy.com/blog/en/2011/the-quick-start-guide-to-selling-on-etsy/

9 Excuses preventing you from becoming a Etsy success.
You don't have to be.

3.) You’re not that good or creative enough.
Don’t sell yourself short!
Not everyone needs to be über creative.
Yes, there are extremely talented artists on Etsy, but there are also regular folks with very successful shops selling craft supplies, and vintage items. Some of the top sellers in the jewelry category (my category), simply hang a pretty pendant from a single chain; not tremendously creative but exactly what their buyers were looking for.

4.) You don’t know what your passion is; you can’t think of a niche.
Understandable. Not everyone is there, yet.
However if you want to do something, but just can’t figure out what, go to the bookstore and see what section you gravitate towards. Spend some time browsing through the magazine racks; if there wasn’t a market, there wouldn’t be a magazine.
Do some soul searching to determine what you’ll forever be passionate about.

9 Excuses preventing you from becoming a Etsy success.
There's a buyer for everything!

5.) Nobody will buy.
If people will buy the “Pet Rock” they will buy what you’re selling.
You just have to figure out how to market yourself.
Good photos of your merchandise and detailed descriptions are a good start, but you also need to work at getting your items noticed. You’re probably already using facebook and pinterest; create your own promotions using the tools available to you.
I found this article on marketing interesting:

6.) You can’t be successful until you have _______.
Money, studio, tools, website, expensive camera, stock pile, or any other number of other factors.
Make every attempt to acquire the bare essentials quickly.
Plot out your steps and create milestones to acquire additional resources.
Missions and objectives do wonders for progress.

7.) It’s too hard keeping all the balls in the air.
Anything worth doing is hard.
When was the last time “easy” had a huge payoff for you?

9 Excuses preventing you from becoming a Etsy success.

“You are in the middle of your day today, and you’re caught up in the sandstorm of thoughts, feelings, to-dos, meetings, readings, and communications of this day.
Pause. Breathe. Let all of that fade.
Now focus on doing one thing, right now.”
~Leo Babauta

8.) You can’t commit right now.
Fair enough, we all have a lot on our plates.
But when can you commit?
Don’t use this excuse to push something aside, if you don’t want to invest the time.
If it’s genuinely interesting, look at your calendar and ask “when can I commit?” and put yourself on a productive path.
And if you don’t want to do it, be honest and admit you’re not interested. Close your shop.
People will always respect honesty over being strung along waiting for your new items.

9.) You don’t have time.
Seriously? You just had time to read my blog post. You have time.
In fact, you have all the time, resources, and knowledge required to be a great Etsy seller.
Being great, no, being excellent is a choice.
It’s a choice to never stop. It’s a choice to view yourself as limitless. It’s a choice to stop at nothing until everyone knows your name and shop.
Without a doubt, you’ll encounter many obstacles on your journey. That’s a given.

So what are you waiting for?
Go.
Be great.

Have you ever had a professional family photo shoot?

Have you ever had a professional family photo shoot?  I’ve been researching how to get this done with as little pain as possible. This little side project started after a recent trip to see my side of the family in Indiana.  Prior to departing I asked the daughters for a recent picture of all the grandchildren (together) so I could show my parents. I assumed this would be an easy request since they are never very far away from their phones and snap candid photos all the time.  When they couldn’t come up with one picture that had all the kids together I decided it was time to take action and work on a family photo shoot.

Going into this I know that it will be no small feat, especially with two three year olds who are always on the move, complicated career schedules with little time to do this, band practice, and Son-in-laws who don’t always see eye-to-eye.  With a little planning on my part, I will somehow manage to get everyone in our family looking happy and peaceful for the camera, if only for a few minutes.

Here are some tips that I’ll be using to make this a positive experience for everyone:

Organize

I’ve learned that there is nothing that will make a family posing for a photograph turn on you faster than not being prepared. People, especially little ones, don’t like to be kept waiting; so this is what I’ll be doing to prepare:

  1. Scope out the location beforehand. The background is not the most important subject of the photo; keep it simple and uncluttered. Atlanta has beautiful parks and natural settings; other fun settings might be the front porch, old buildings, or pretty fences. I’d love to use an old barn, but they are in short supply here in the city.
  2. Think ahead about the pose. How will we position everyone and frame the shot, I’ve learned that photos with taller members in the group towards the back and centered with shorter people on the edges of the group look best.
  3. Communicate what is expected. It will be important to make sure everyone in the family knows my goal. I need to get by-in to make this successful.
  4. Prepare the equipment needed. Check the camera settings and adjust, make sure it has charged batteries. Test the sturdiness of the tripod on uneven terrain with the new camera.

Schedule

I’ve also learned that when the photo is taken is just as important as where the photo is taken. In order to get enough detail you need to have sufficient light. So, getting schedules coordinated to fit the best lighting conditions is important.

1.   Schedule the photo shoot when kids are at their best. Usually, at least for little ones, this means 5 to 6 p.m. is not the best time.  Morning seems to be better idea.
2.  That said – lighting is important, so we may have to be flexible.  Bright, high noon sunshine is not ideal, so I’d like to shoot outdoor photos either in the morning or just before dusk.  If it’s a bright day and the sun is low in the sky, don’t position the sun directly behind the camera or you’ll have a collection of squinting faces in your shot.

The Look

The photo above is a good example of what to do when it comes to dressing for the shoot.  The photo collage below is what not to do when dressing for the shoot - Too much of any one pattern is never a good thing and porta-potty's are not the best choice for a backdrop.

1.   Coordinate, but don’t match. I know several families that like to wear the same outfit for their portraits.  But in the examples that I’ve looked at, photos look better when everyone blends well, but doesn’t match too much.  To be honest, when I see a photo with the entire family wearing the same thing, all I see is a sea of one color – not the people.
2.   Avoid patterns. It’s okay if one family member has a simple stripe or a basic design, but too many intricate patterns distracts from the overall look.  Overall it’s better to go with a simple, solid-colored shirt in a neutral tone. Several neutral colors (denim, grey, white, khaki) mixed with a “pop” of color seems to work best.
3.   Go casual. Especially if you have little ones.  I love photos that look like the family is relaxed, and having fun with each other; not posed stiffly in their Sunday best.

Above: Four -BAD- examples of Family Photo Shoots

Above: Some good choices for a coordinated look for your photo shoot.

The Shot

The beauty of digital photography is that you can edit, retake, retouch, and experiment in all sorts of ways.  Have fun taking the photo and keep it relaxed and light-hearted.

1.   Take Multiple Shots. One of the best ways to avoid the problems is to take multiple photos quickly. I’ve learned that the first shot is often not so good, the one or two directly after it often look a little less posed and more relaxed.
2.  Similarly – shoot some frames off before everyone is ready.  Sometimes the organization of a group shot can be quite amusing with people telling each other where to go and jostling for position.
3.   Get in Close. Try to get as close as you can to the group you’re photographing (without cutting some members of it out of course). The closer you can get the more detail you’ll have in their faces – something that defines a great photo.

Take Control

Those who know me well will think that this step should not be an issue for me. I have no trouble taking control of a group and making them comfortable working together.  But when it comes to family I’m low on the list of authority.  So I’m going to approach this with determination and clear direction.

1.   Keep talking to the family members, letting them know what to do, motivating them to smile, telling them that they look great and communicating how much longer I’ll need their attention.
2.   Also important is to give a reason to pose for the photograph. When you give people a reason to pose for you they are much more willing to take a few minutes to pose.
3.   Another very useful line is – ‘If you can see the camera it can see you’. This one is key if you want to be able to see each person’s face in the shot.
4.   If there are more photographers than just you or distractions like a plane overhead, wait until the moment passes and then get the attention of the full group. Otherwise you’ll have everyone looking in different directions.
5.   Of course I don’t want to be a dictator when posing the family or I could end up with shots of very angry people. The best photographers know how to get people’s attention, communicate what they want but also keep people feeling relaxed, and like they are having fun.

Smile
Yes, I mean Me.  There’s nothing worse than a grumpy stressed out photographer. I want to Have fun and enjoy the process of getting the family photo and I hope the family will too!

Cheers!

Logging My Favorites...Local Three

Kitchen and Bar

This is the eighth installment of an ongoing log of my favorite things. Periodically I will post a favorite. It might be a person, or a place, or even an event. Hopefully it will help you get to know me a little better. I'd love your comments and I hope to make some connections through our mutual enjoyment of these treasures.

What took me so long to log this favorite?... Local Three Kitchen and Bar…Atlanta, GA

I may not be a true food critic, but I do consider myself a Foodie. I consider Local Three a destination-worthy restaurant. What is a “destination-worthy” restaurant you ask?  I believe it’s an eatery that will actually motivate you to get in your car, travel inside the perimeter (into the city for those not familiar with Atlanta), and search out a place that is so wonderful you don’t want to leave.

Perhaps it's the ability of Local Three’s staff to make you feel comfy and cozy.  To build an overall experience that makes you think, if only for an hour or two, that you’re dining in a friend’s home or maybe your mom’s kitchen.

Todd Mussman, Ryan Turner, and Chris Hall
Todd Mussman, Ryan Turner, and Chris Hall

Using one the best kitchens in the country, co-owners Chef Chris Hall, Chef Todd Mussman, Business Dude Ryan Turner, and the Local Three staff offer a neighborhood spot with really good food, a wide selection of beverages and exceptional service!

Some of my Favorites at Local Three Kichen and Bar, GA
A few of my Favorites

You enter the restaurant through the “hidden” wide plank wooden door into the come-as-you-are atmosphere and "foie gras in your flip flops" ambiance. They consistently serve the best quality cuisine at affordable prices. And on Sundays, they invite you into the kitchen to “fix a plate” at their buffet style Sunday brunch…love it!
Chef Chris Hall’s Viewpoint:  “We’re operating under one guiding principle: “You can’t argue with delicious.” That really sums up our culinary philosophy. It will of course be seasonal and we’ll keep it as local as we can—not exclusively, but we want to support farmers close to us when we can. Fresh is best. We’re not trying to do anything earth shattering or revolutionary, we just want to cook great food that people enjoy!”

Wall Art at Local Three Kitchen and Bar, Atlanta, GA

OH, did I mention the velvet Elvis, original folk art and "The Dude" Lebowski on the wall?  You just can’t be pretentions with velvet Elvis greeting you.

Chef Hall said it best: “We’re serious about our food, not ourselves.”
Go!  Now!  Be prepared to “sit deep and stay long” – they live by their philosophy and they want to get to know you … I can attest to this.
